Bookworm’s quiz nights, a salute to the international pub quiz, date back to September 2006 and now regularly see around 50 people turning out for each session. After a summer hiatus, quiz nighters will rejoin on Aug. 12 for either a pre-season kick-off or the season’s official start, depending on turnout. On quiz night, the designated quiz master reads off the questions with teams vying to answer correctly; at the end of the night the winning team receives a bottle of whiskey; the second and third place teams each win a bottle of wine. A tally is kept throughout the 10-session season, and grand winners at the end of each season win more substantial prizes. Anybody can volunteer to be quiz master for a night, although questions are approved by quiz-night authorities prior to the night. Each session features eight categories of questions—such as film & art, sports, Chinese history, etc.—which along with the questions themselves are created by the quiz master. Both groups and individuals are welcome; teams can be any number of people between two and 10, although quiz veterans will assure you that representing a broad range of ages is key to ensure that your team has the generations-spanning cultural knowledge that characterize the questions.
