You might have seen them playing at Café Panam(e) and then wondered where they went. The answer? Yulin Shenghuo’s Music House. One of only a handful of regularly gigging live bands in Chengdu, Boss Ma has become one of the city’s best-known jazz bands with their well-rehearsed repertoire of standards. For Music House, they add some funk/fusion into the mix, foregoing the free-wheeling jams of Panam(e). The five-piece band, representing three countries, rounds out its sound with two saxophonists (who occasionally pick up other horns on stage) plus percussion, keyboard/synthesizer, and bass (switching between upright and electric). While the band’s charismatic front woman Melissa Carroll gigs outside of Chengdu temporarily, fellow American saxophonist Brent will stand in. Entrance is free to the near-nightly gigs at the Music House, but drink prices at the well-established Yulin spot’s are slightly above average.
